Mark Center Today
Mark Center is an older, large-scale community located within the planned redevelopment area identified in the Beauregard Small Area Plan (BSAP). Today, the Mark Center community includes more than 5,700 homes and has a commercial core that includes 160,000 square feet of retail, over 500 total hotel rooms and 3.4 million square feet of office space. JBG's portion of the community consists of 2,600 apartments and 50,000 square feet of retail. The adjacent 43-acre Winkler Botanical Preserve is also part of the Mark Center community.
The JBG Companies owns and manages six aging apartment communities collectively called The Apartments at Mark Center. These communities are Brookdale, Hillwood, Stoneridge, Lynbrook, Meadow Creek and Willow Run and total approximately 2,700 apartments. Many of the apartment homes were built as part of the original Mark Center community in the 1950’s.
JBG also owns the shopping center on North Beauregard Street that is anchored by Global Foods, Starbucks and CVS Pharmacy.
JBG purchased the properties in 2005 and has invested more than $10 million in capital improvements to provide individual apartment upgrades, more efficient HVAC systems and improved landscaping. JBG will continue to upgrade the apartments at Mark Center in the coming years. JBG maintains and professionally manages multiple amenities such as The Pavilion at Mark Center with three pools, a business center, fitness center and a resident lounge that hosts a number of monthly events for residents. JBG also offers free daily shuttle service to the Pentagon City Metro station.
A Growing Community
Over the last several decades Alexandria’s West End has more than doubled in population without an adequate plan to address such growth. The area, which is primarily served by automobiles, must better integrate a variety of transportation options that encourage walking, biking and public transit, in addition to adding new infrastructure to handle all the increased activity. In response to this need, the City of Alexandria spent three years working with residents, urban planners and property owners to create a new long-term vision for growth in the Beauregard area. Called the Beauregard Small Area Plan (BSAP), this plan was approved in 2012 and is expected to accommodate the next 30 years of growth in a measured way – creating economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development.

In addition to JBG, other property owners have been involved in the Beauregard Small Area Plan (BSAP) over the years, including Home Properties, Hekemian, Southern Towers and Duke Properties.
The residents of Alexandria, along with City leaders, have developed a plan to make the Beauregard Corridor a dynamic, modern, mixed-use, mixed-income community offering pedestrian-centered neighborhoods where residents enjoy more choices in living, shopping, dining and recreation. The BSAP takes a holistic approach to the needs of the community and balances priorities to plan for new infrastructure, amenities, and homes. It secures dedicated affordable housing, open space, and significant transportation improvements where it previously did not exist to take advantage of the region’s current and future growth.
In response to the City's plan, the JBG Companies' ultimate goal is to add a significant number of walkable amenities including shops, grocery, restaurants and more – while taking advantage of the excellent location, preserving the natural setting and offering a diverse range of housing options, to include guaranteed affordable housing which does not exist today.
